Resources & Help

At SPAN, we believe that access to accurate information, timely support, and trusted resources can make a significant difference in promoting mental well-being and preventing suicide. This page is designed to provide guidance, educational materials, and pathways to support for individuals, families, educators, community leaders, healthcare professionals, and organizations.
Whether you are seeking information for yourself, supporting someone in distress, looking for educational resources, or exploring ways to strengthen suicide prevention efforts within your community, we hope these resources will help you take informed and compassionate action.
Please note that SPAN is not a crisis intervention service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact emergency services or a crisis helpline in your area immediately.
Our goal is to foster awareness, strengthen resilience, encourage early help-seeking, and connect individuals and communities with the support and resources they need.
If Someone Is in Immediate Danger
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or at risk of self-harm, do not leave the person alone. Contact local emergency services, a nearby hospital, a mental health professional, or a trusted person immediately.
SPAN encourages every person in distress to reach out. Asking for help is not weakness. It is a courageous step toward safety and healing.

I Need Help Now
If you are experiencing overwhelming emotional pain, thoughts of self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or feel unable to keep yourself safe, it is important to seek help immediately. Remember that you do not have to face these difficulties alone. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services or visit the nearest hospital emergency department. If possible, inform a trusted family member, friend, colleague, teacher, faith leader, or healthcare professional about what you are experiencing. Staying connected with supportive people can help reduce isolation and increase safety during difficult moments.
Recovery is possible, and support is available. Many people who once experienced suicidal thoughts have found hope, healing, and meaningful lives through timely support and treatment.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, emotionally distressed, anxious, hopeless, lonely, or struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please remember that you do not have to face it alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of courage and an important first step toward healing.

How to Help a Friend or Loved One who is in distress
Listen
Give the person time and space to speak. Listen without judgment, interruption, or criticism.
Take Them Seriously
Never dismiss their pain. Avoid saying things like “Don’t think like that” or “Others have bigger problems.”
Stay Calm
Your calm presence can help the person feel safer.
Encourage Help
Guide them to speak with a mental health professional, counsellor, doctor, trusted family member, or trained support person.
Do Not Leave Them Alone in Crisis
If there is immediate risk, stay with the person and seek urgent help.
Follow Up
Support should not end after one conversation. Continue checking in.
Postvention and Bereavement Support
The impact of a suicide death extends far beyond the individual and can profoundly affect families, friends, classmates, colleagues, faith communities, workplaces, and entire communities. Those affected by suicide often experience intense grief, shock, confusion, guilt, anger, unanswered questions, and a wide range of emotional and practical challenges.
Postvention refers to the coordinated support and response provided after a suicide death. Effective postvention aims to support those who are grieving, promote healing and recovery, reduce stigma, strengthen community resilience, and minimize the risk of suicide contagion among vulnerable individuals.
Every person grieves differently, and there is no single “right way” to mourn a loss. Compassionate support, connection, and access to appropriate resources can help individuals and communities navigate the healing process.
