Message from the Director

Dear friends,
With deep concern for human life and with great hope in the power of compassionate communities, I welcome you to SPAN – Suicide Prevention Awareness Network: Research & Training.
Suicide is one of the most painful realities of our time. Behind every suicide is a story of suffering, silence, isolation, and unmet need. Behind every prevention is a story of listening, timely support, care, and hope. At SPAN, we believe that no one should suffer alone, and no person in distress should ever feel that death is the only answer.
SPAN was born from the conviction that suicide prevention is possible when society becomes aware, sensitive, trained, and united. Suicide prevention is not the responsibility of mental health professionals alone. It is a shared mission that involves families, teachers, students, institutions, religious communities, healthcare systems, volunteers, policymakers, and every person who is willing to listen and care. We prioritise the role of family-based care for human flourishing and mental well-being.
Through SPAN, we are committed to reaching people through awareness programs, training, research, and community action. Our focus is not only on crisis response but also on building a culture where mental health is valued, emotional pain is understood, and help is available before a person reaches the point of hopelessness.
We wish to train communities, empower institutions, support families, guide youth, and strengthen systems that protect life. Our dream is to form a network of caring people who can recognize distress, offer initial support, and connect individuals to appropriate help.
I invite educators, parents, students, professionals, religious leaders, community workers, policymakers, volunteers, and all people of goodwill to join hands with us in this mission. Every awareness session, every training programme, every supportive conversation, and every timely response can become a life-saving act.
Let us work together to build a society where every life is respected, every cry for help is heard, and every person is reminded that hope is still possible.

With prayerful wishes and commitment,
Sr. Celine Jose
