Who We Are
SPAN – Suicide Prevention Awareness Network: Research & Training is a collaborative platform committed to reducing suicide and promoting mental well-being through research, education and training, awareness, and community action.
SPAN brings together psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, educators, medical professionals, parents, students, religious leaders, community members, institutions, volunteers, and researchers who share one mission: Connecting Hope & Saving Lives. We believe that suicide prevention must be rooted in compassion, guided by evidence, supported by training, and strengthened by community participation. SPAN works to create a society where people in emotional distress are not judged, ignored, or isolated, but welcomed with empathy, patience, and timely support.
Our Identity
SPAN is not only an organization; it is a network of care.

  • It is a network that connects people in need with people who can help.

  • It is a network that connects families with awareness.

  • It is a network that connects institutions with responsibility.

  • It is a network that connects research with action.

  • It is a network that connects suffering with hope.

Our Approach
SPAN adopts a community-oriented, culturally sensitive, interdisciplinary, and evidence-informed approach to suicide prevention. Our programmes are designed to suit the Indian social and cultural context, where emotional struggles are often hidden due to stigma, shame, fear, family pressure, academic stress, social expectations, financial difficulty, and a lack of accessible mental health support.
This multi-level approach helps SPAN address suicide prevention as a social responsibility and a public health priority by working at the following levels:

  • Individual level

  • Family level

  • Institutional level

  • Community level

  • Professional level

  • Policy and research level

Our Values

  • Compassion: We believe that every person in distress deserves to be treated with kindness, dignity, patience, and respect.

  • Hope: We believe that hope can be restored when people receive timely support, understanding, and care.

  • Human Dignity: Every life is valuable, and every person matters. No one should be reduced to their suffering or crisis.

  • Care: We approach every individual with compassion, dignity, and respect, recognizing the inherent value of every human life. Our commitment to care is reflected in our efforts to create safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental spaces where individuals can find understanding, hope, and connection.

  • Responsibility: Suicide prevention is a shared responsibility. Families, institutions, communities, professionals, and society must work together.

  • Evidence-Based Action: SPAN gives importance to scientific research, training, data, and culturally relevant prevention strategies.

  • Community Participation: We believe that communities can become powerful spaces of care, support, and prevention.

Why We Exist
SPAN exists because many people suffer silently, hesitate to ask for help, or are surrounded by families and institutions that do not know how to respond or lack trained support systems. Many communities avoid conversations about suicide because of stigma and fear.
SPAN exists to change this silence into support.

  • We work so that people can recognize warning signs.

  • We work so that families can respond early.

  • We work so that institutions can create support systems.

  • We work so that communities can become sensitive and caring.

  • We work so that professional help and community support can come together.

SPAN exists to protect life.
